A re-occurring issue in many of our septic system inspections stems from the simple practice of pouring cooking oils and grease down the drain, Please do not do this. Also the use of powdered laundry detergents and body soaps high in oxidisers, Read the label. Over use of the above can result in a crust buildup in septic tanks and pump chambers, as well as on pump float switches. We recommend the use of liquid laundry detergents and oxidiser free body soaps.

Every 3 - 5 years your Septic Tank should be pumped out, depending on the size of your tank. When Septic Tanks are not pumped out on a regular basis scum and sludge levels in the Septic Tank become so high there is insufficient space in the tank for liquids. This results in solids or grease entering into the drain field. Raw sewage and waste waters must be retained in the Septic Tank long enough for Biological Decomposition to occur. Three days detention is normal.
A strong perfumed lye soap solution and stiff brush works well for exposed surfaces.
A nose clip may be required for this task.
